X FACTOR winner Alexandra Burke is outselling Robbie Williams two to one in the midweek charts. The news comes just days after the singer met her all-time musical hero on the TV reality show. Both singers previewed their singles on Sunday night’s results show, which was seen by 14.6 million people.
Alexandra’s show-stopping performance, complete with more than 40 male dancers, clearly struck a chord with more of the record-buying public.
By yesterday she had sold 89,384 copies of Bad Boys, while Robbie’s single, Bodies, had 42,751 sales.
Appearing on GMTV yesterday, Alexandra ignored criticisms of Robbie’s performance and said: “I thought he was fantastic.” Speaking about the star’s first appearance on a British stage in three years, she said Robbie was right to play up to his fans.
She said: “The audience in the studio are actual people who line up outside – it’s not families – so it’s proper fans out there. Of course you’ve got to play to them.”
Alexandra admitted she was nervous to meet Robbie. She said: “When I met him I was like, ‘Hello Mr Williams’ – I got really scared.”
Robbie’s performance on The X Factor met with criticism from some quarters. He blamed his nerves on a jammed stage door putting him off his stride.
Judge Cheryl Cole defended his erratic antics yesterday. She said: “This is his first thing he’s done in ages – can you imagine, your first thing coming back is X Factor. “I thought he looked a bit nervous. I genuinely felt like he was thinking, ‘wow, I’m back, this is it’. It must be scary, he’s been through a lot.”
Alexandra also failed to impress some viewers, who claimed the singer was miming during certain sections of the song.
Alexandra, who can’t wait to see if she will take the top spot at the weekend, also said she loves the buzz of her new showbiz lifestyle.
She said: “There really is no time to do anything.
It’s literally live, eat, breathe, singing, working – do what I need to do – sleep, get up, do the same thing. And it’s fun – I love it.”
This weekend’s charts are also sure to feature a heavy presence of Boyzone songs as 2008 compilation album Back Again … No Matter What has re-entered the top 100 following the death of member Stephen Gately.
