Update: Live Coverage of Christmas Lights Turn On from Manchester
The singer was originally due to perform in both cities on Thursday, flying between the shows by helicopter.
Organisers Real Radio would only say “contractual commitments” meant Burke, 21, could no longer take part.
Pixie Lott will now be topping the bill in Leeds with Mini Viva, Lorraine Kelly and Santa also appearing.
In a statement Leeds City Council said: “Whilst it is unfortunate that Alexandra Burke is not appearing, the show will be packed with great acts and multi-award winning artist Pixie Lott will headline.”
‘Bad manners’
Local radio station Real Radio, which was responsible for contracting artists for the Leeds show, said: “We are very sorry that due to contractual commitments Alexander Burke will not be able to perform at this year’s Leeds Lights switch on.”
Neither the council nor Real Radio would say what the contractual issues were.
Burke’s fans in West Yorkshire have been angered by the singer’s decision to stay away.
Speaking on Radio Leeds, Mike from Haworth said: “It’s bad manners if nothing else. I think local radio stations should ban her records.”
Burke will still be switching on Manchester’s Christmas lights in Albert Square on Thursday.
She is also scheduled to switch on Birmingham’s lights on Saturday.
Burke recently reached number one in the charts with her debut album, Overcome.
